Embolectomy is the emergency interventional or surgical removal of emboli blocking blood circulation, usually the removal of thrombi, in which case it is also called thromboembolectomy or thrombectomy. It is an emergency procedure, often a last resort, because permanent occlusion of significant blood flow to an organ leads to tissue death, with anticoagulation and thrombolysis as the other therapeutic options.
