Surgical Procedure

Organ transplantation is the surgical transfer of a functioning organ from a donor to a recipient. The first successful transplant of a solid organ, a kidney, was performed in 1954 by a team led by Joseph Murray between identical twins, which avoided the immune rejection that had defeated earlier attempts; transplantation of other organs and between non-identical donors followed once effective immunosuppressive drugs were developed in subsequent decades.
