Johns Hopkins Medicine traces its founding to the Johns Hopkins Hospital, which opened in Baltimore on May 7, 1889, funded by a seven-million-dollar bequest, then the largest philanthropic gift in American history, from merchant and banker Johns Hopkins. Hopkins stipulated that the hospital ultimately form part of a medical school, an integration of patient care, education and research that shaped the modern American teaching hospital. The hospital's founding physicians, William Osler, William Halsted, William Welch and Howard Kelly, known as the Big Four, established the residency system and bedside clinical teaching still used today.
