Raymond Jacques Adrien Sabouraud was a French physician, born in Nantes on 24 November 1864, who died on 4 February 1938. He specialized in dermatology and mycology, the study of skin disease and of fungi, and he was also an accomplished painter and sculptor. He studied medicine in Nantes and Paris, worked as a hospital interne at the Hopital Saint-Louis and the Hopital des Enfants-Assistes, and then studied bacteriology at the Pasteur Institute. He took his doctorate in 1894 and later directed a laboratory at the Hopital Saint-Louis. In 1904 he introduced radiological treatment for ringworm of the scalp, and his clinic drew patients from many countries. He devised a low-acidity, sugar-rich medium for selecting fungi, still known as Sabouraud agar, and he co-edited the eight-volume Nouvelle Pratique Dermatologique.
