Christian Julius Wilhelm Schiede was a German medical doctor and botanist, born in Kassel on 3 February 1798. He studied natural sciences and medicine in Berlin and Göttingen, where he earned his doctorate in 1825, and then practiced medicine in Kassel. In 1828 he emigrated to Mexico with the German naturalist Ferdinand Deppe, and the two planned to collect zoological and botanical specimens to sell to museums and dealers in Europe. They settled in Jalapa in July 1828 and made scientific excursions across the state of Veracruz. Their collections reached museums in Berlin and Vienna, but the income was too small to continue and they gave up the venture in late 1830. Schiede died in Mexico in December 1836 at the age of 38. The plant genera Schiedeella and Schiedea and the lizard Anolis schiedei are named after him.
