Georg Wolfgang Franz Panzer (31 May 1755 to 28 June 1829) was a German medical doctor, botanist and entomologist, born at Etzelwang in the Upper Palatinate, the son of a pastor and bibliographer of the same name. He studied medicine, including botany, at Erlangen and Altdorf from 1774, wrote a doctoral dissertation of 1777 titled De Dolore, and continued his studies at Vienna, Strasbourg and in Switzerland. He was admitted to the Collegium medicum in Nuremberg in 1780 and in 1798 became official town physician at Hersbruck, where he lived until his death. He promoted cowpox vaccination from 1795 and the Linnaean system of nomenclature. He kept a species-rich herbarium and worked on the classification of grasses, and assembled an insect collection that underlay his Faunae insectorum germanicae initia, a survey of German insects with more than 2,600 hand-coloured plates by Jacob Sturm, issued in 109 parts between 1796 and 1813. He was admitted to the Leopoldina Academy in 1789.
