Helene Langevin is an American physician and medical researcher who served as director of the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health at the National Institutes of Health from November 2018 to November 2025. She earned her medical degree from McGill University in 1978 and completed postdoctoral training in neurochemistry, internal medicine and endocrinology. Before her NIH directorship she was a professor in the Department of Neurological Sciences at the University of Vermont College of Medicine and held faculty positions at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital. She became widely known for research examining the physical and biomechanical mechanisms of acupuncture, studying how needle stimulation and manipulation affect connective tissue and cellular signaling in human and animal studies, work credited with bringing more rigorous scientific study to a practice long dismissed by much of conventional medicine.
