Josef Aloys Frölich, also known as Alois von Frölich, was a German medical doctor who also worked as a botanist and entomologist. Born in Marktoberdorf in 1766, he took his medical degree at Erlangen in 1796 with a dissertation on the genus Gentiana, and he published early papers on intestinal worms and on beetles in the journal Der Naturforscher. In botany he described many species within the genus Hieracium, and the genus Froelichia, of the amaranth family, is named in his honour. His son Franz Anton Gottfried Frölich was also an entomologist, specialising in Lepidoptera, and the two should not be confused. This entry rests on one encyclopedia article and records only what it states.
