Rudolf Otto Anselm Höber was a German physiologist, born in Stettin, Prussia, on 27 December 1873 and dying in Philadelphia on 5 September 1953. He took his medical degree at Erlangen in 1897, worked as an assistant at the Physiological Institute in Zurich, and in 1909 moved to the University of Kiel, where he became professor of physiology and director of the Institute for Physiology in 1915. His textbook Physikalische Chemie der Zelle und Gewebe, first appearing in 1902, went through six German editions and long remained the standard work on cellular physiology. His research concerned transport through cell membranes and their permeability. The anti-Jewish laws forced him out of Kiel, and he settled at the University of Pennsylvania as visiting professor of physiology from 1936 until his death.
