Forensic Pathology

Hospital-Based and Diagnostic Specialties
Origin The nineteenth-century German pathologist Rudolf Virchow, developer of the Virchow autopsy method, is credited as a founding figure of the field; forensic pathology was first formally recognized as a subspecialty in the United States by the American Board of Pathology in 1959, and in Canada in 2003.

Forensic pathology is the branch of pathology that determines the cause and manner of death by examining a corpse, typically on behalf of a legal or coronial authority, distinct from clinical and anatomical pathology practiced on living patients. This atlas records what the historical record supports and is not medical advice.
