Cyclothymia is a mental and behavioural disorder that involves numerous periods of symptoms of depression and periods of symptoms of elevated mood, neither of which is severe enough to indicate a major depressive episode or a manic episode. Symptoms must last more than one year in children and two years in adults, the cause is unknown, and males and females are affected equally often; the disorder's onset typically occurs in late childhood to early adulthood, and it is estimated that 0.4 to 1 percent of people experience it at some point in their lives. Cyclothymia differs from bipolar disorder in that major depression and mania are not found, and the DSM-5 classifies it as a subtype of bipolar disorder.
