Effects of long-term benzodiazepine use

Mental and Behavioural Disorders

Long-term use of benzodiazepines, generally defined as continuous use for at least three months, carries a significant risk of drug dependence along with possible adverse effects on cognitive function, physical health, and mental health. Although benzodiazepines are usually effective for short-term therapeutic use, the risk of dependency remains high even at that stage. Anxiety can temporarily worsen as a withdrawal symptom when a person reduces or stops the drug, but evidence shows anxiety symptoms tend to decrease over the long run once withdrawal is complete, which is why slow, gradual withdrawal is recommended for long-term users. Not every person who takes benzodiazepines for an extended period develops these problems.
