Hoarding disorder is a mental health condition marked by persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions, regardless of their actual value, driven by a perceived need to save the items and distress associated with discarding them, which results in the accumulation of possessions that congest and clutter living spaces to the point of compromising their intended use. It was recognized as its own diagnosis, separate from obsessive-compulsive disorder, in the DSM-5 in 2013.
