Insomnia disorder is a mental health condition marked by persistent difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or achieving restful sleep, occurring at least three nights a week for at least three months despite adequate opportunity for sleep, and causing significant distress or impairment in daytime functioning. It is one of the most common sleep disorders and can occur on its own or alongside other medical or psychiatric conditions, and chronic insomnia is commonly treated with cognitive behavioral therapy or, in some cases, short-term medication.
