A cerebral shunt is a device permanently implanted inside the head and body to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid away from the brain. It is commonly used to treat hydrocephalus, the swelling of the brain from excess buildup of cerebrospinal fluid, which if left unchecked can raise intracranial pressure and cause intracranial hematoma, cerebral edema, crushed brain tissue or herniation.
