Cholecystectomy

Surgical Procedure

Cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder, most commonly performed to treat symptomatic gallstones and other gallbladder disease. German surgeon Carl Langenbuch carried out the first successful cholecystectomy on July 15, 1882, at Lazarus Hospital in Berlin. The operation is performed today primarily through a minimally invasive laparoscopic approach, though an open technique remains available for complicated cases, and it is among the most common elective abdominal operations performed worldwide.
