Cervical Cancer

Neoplasms

Cervical cancer develops in the cervix, the lower narrow part of the uterus, when cells there grow abnormally and invade surrounding tissue. Early cervical cancer typically causes no symptoms, while later stages can produce abnormal vaginal bleeding or pelvic pain. Persistent infection with certain strains of human papillomavirus is the principal established cause, and the disease develops over many years through a series of precancerous changes in cervical tissue.
