Targeted Intraoperative Radiotherapy

Oncologic Therapy

Targeted intraoperative radiotherapy, also known as targeted IORT, is a technique for delivering radiotherapy to the tissues surrounding a cancer after its surgical removal, a form of intraoperative radiation therapy designed in 1998 at University College London. One such technique is known as TARGIT (TARGeted Intraoperative radioTherapy), in which radiation is applied during the operation itself and targeted specifically to the peri-tumoural tissue; the TARGIT technique was designed at University College London by Jayant S. Vaidya, who coined the TARGIT acronym, together with Michael Baum and Jeffrey S. Tobias in 1998, when the term was first used to describe it.
