Hans Kundrat (1845 to 1893) was a pathologist born in Vienna in the Austrian Empire. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna, where as a student he worked as a demonstrator under Josef Hyrtl and Karl von Rokitansky, took his medical doctorate in 1868 and stayed on as Rokitansky's assistant. He qualified as a lecturer in 1873, took the chair of pathology at the University of Graz in 1877, and returned to Vienna in 1882 as chair of pathology, a post he held until he died at the age of forty-seven. Among his better known students was Richard Paltauf. In 1893 he gave a comprehensive description of lymphosarcoma and distinguished it from other diseases such as pseudoleukemia and some forms of Hodgkin's disease; the condition was for a time called Kundrat's disease in his honour. In gynecology he and George Julius Engelmann were the first to document the cyclical changes of the endometrium.
