Artificial ventilation, also called artificial respiration, is a means of assisting or stimulating a person breathing. It may take the form of manually providing air for a person who is not breathing or is not breathing adequately, or the form of mechanical ventilation, in which a ventilator moves air in and out of the lungs of someone unable to breathe unassisted, such as during surgery under general anesthesia or while in a coma or after trauma.
