Tracheal intubation, usually referred to simply as intubation, is the placement of a flexible plastic tube into the trachea to keep the airway open or to serve as a channel through which certain drugs can be given. It is frequently performed on critically injured, seriously ill or anesthetized patients to support ventilation of the lungs, including mechanical ventilation, and to prevent asphyxiation or airway obstruction.
