Monitored anesthesia care, abbreviated MAC, is an anesthesia service in which a licensed anesthesia provider, such as an anesthesiologist, anesthesiologist assistant or certified registered nurse anesthetist, continually attends to a patient's sedation, comfort and vital signs before, during and after a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure. It combines local anesthesia with intravenously administered sedative and analgesic drugs, and its provider must be prepared to manage every level of sedation up to and including general anesthesia if the patient's condition requires it.
