Cricoidectomy is the surgical excision of the cricoid cartilage, often performed under local anaesthetic, either partially or totally. The procedure may be necessary as a treatment for pulmonary aspiration, to prevent progression to aspiration pneumonia, since the cricoid cartilage is the narrowest part of the trachea and is also a common point of blockage or narrowing.
