Emergency Preservation and Resuscitation, or EPR, is an experimental technique for trauma patients in cardiac arrest from severe blood loss who would otherwise have almost no chance of survival. The patient blood is replaced with ice-cold saline to induce profound hypothermia around 10 degrees Celsius, slowing metabolism so surgeons have roughly an hour to repair life-threatening wounds before a heart-lung bypass machine restarts circulation and the body is gradually rewarmed. Human trials began in the 2010s, though the primary trial was later terminated over enrollment and logistical difficulties.
