Preanesthetic Assessment

Preanesthetic assessment is a final medical evaluation carried out by an anesthesia provider, such as an anesthesiologist, nurse anesthetist or anesthesia assistant, before a surgery or procedure to make sure anesthesia can be given safely. It includes a review of the patient's medical history, current medications and any past experience with anesthesia, a conversation with the patient to confirm that information and address concerns, the development of an anesthetic plan tailored to the patient, and obtaining informed consent after the patient confirms understanding of the risks involved. The assessment is meant to identify risk factors and possible complications before the procedure so the anesthesia team can adjust its approach and reduce the chance of an adverse outcome.
