Gerson therapy is an alternative cancer treatment developed by German-born American physician Max Gerson, combining a plant-based diet of hourly vegetable juices and restricted vegetables and fruit, initially excluding meat and dairy entirely, with regular enemas of coffee, castor oil or hydrogen peroxide, dietary supplements and raw calf liver extract. The National Cancer Institute evaluated Gerson's own data and found no benefit, and the American Cancer Society states there is no reliable scientific evidence it treats cancer effectively; the therapy has caused documented complications including bacterial infections from raw liver extract, electrolyte imbalances and deaths.
