A sinus lift, also called maxillary sinus floor augmentation, is a surgical procedure that increases the amount of bone in the upper back jaw by lifting the floor of the maxillary sinus and the membrane lining it, then packing the resulting space with bone graft material. The technique was pioneered by Hilt Tatum in 1974, with the first published reports appearing in 1980. It is most often performed to create enough bone to support a dental implant, achieves long-term success in more than 90 percent of cases, and typically requires three to six months of healing before or alongside implant placement.
