Balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration, abbreviated BRTO, is an endovascular procedure used to treat gastric varices. An interventional radiologist accesses the varicose blood vessels with a catheter, inflates a balloon to prevent the treatment agent from escaping the intended site, and injects a substance that causes the vessels to become blocked.
