Mustard Plaster

Historical and Premodern Treatment Practice

A mustard plaster is a poultice of ground mustard seed spread inside a protective dressing and applied to the body to warm the muscles and relieve chronic aches and pains. It was once a standard part of conventional medical treatment and was sold in prepared form by pharmacies, but it fell out of mainstream use during the twentieth century and today survives mainly as a home remedy.
