Acupressure

Historical and Premodern Treatment Practice

Acupressure is a technique of traditional Chinese medicine in which manual pressure is applied to specific points on the body, often the same points used in acupuncture, sometimes with the aid of tools such as rubber acuballs or rollers. It traces back to Chinese medical writing from a few hundred years before the Common Era and was first systematically described in the Huangdi Neijing, compiled around 100 BCE. Practitioners promote it for managing nausea, vomiting, insomnia, low back pain, migraine and constipation, though systematic reviews have found a significant likelihood of bias in the supporting studies and no reliable evidence that it is effective.
