Osteo-Odonto-Keratoprosthesis

Surgical Procedure

Osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis, known informally as tooth-in-eye surgery, is a procedure to restore vision in the most severe cases of corneal blindness. A tooth is removed from the patient or a donor, a lamina is cut from it and fitted with a cylindrical lens, then grown for months inside the patient's cheek before being implanted onto the eye. The technique was pioneered in the early 1960s by the Italian ophthalmic surgeon Benedetto Strampelli, a founding member of the International Intra-Ocular Implant Club.
