Tommy John surgery, formally known as ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, is a surgical graft procedure in which the ulnar collateral ligament in the medial elbow is replaced with a tendon taken either from elsewhere in the patient body or from a deceased donor. The procedure is common among collegiate and professional athletes in several sports, particularly baseball, and is performed to restore optimal function for repetitive elbow movements or specifically throwing mechanics, often extending the careers of professional athletes; many athletes undergo the surgery more than once in their careers.
