Premedication is the practice of administering medication before another therapy to prepare a patient for that forthcoming treatment. Common examples include giving a sedative or an analgesic before surgery, administering prophylactic antibiotics ahead of an operation to prevent infection, and using antiemetics or antihistamines before chemotherapy to blunt its side effects.
