Anesthetic techniques that numb a specific region or limb by blocking nerve conduction at a defined site, rather than inducing whole-body unconsciousness or numbing only the skin surface being treated. This includes neuraxial techniques delivered around the spinal cord (spinal anesthesia, epidural anesthesia, epidural administration, epidural blood patch, epidural steroid injection, combined spinal and epidural anaesthesia, combined spinal-epidural anesthesia, caudal anesthesia, neuraxial blockade), named peripheral nerve blocks targeting a specific nerve or plexus (brachial plexus block, femoral nerve block, fascia iliaca block, sciatic nerve block, intercostal nerve block, interpleural block, occipital nerve block, paracervical block, pudendal anesthesia, retrobulbar block, transverse abdominis plane block, Bier block), and the general regional-anesthesia and nerve-block concepts and related injection techniques (regional anesthesia, nerve block anesthesia, intravenous regional anesthesia, facet joint injection). A technique confined to the skin or a small treated surface with no deeper nerve block is grouped instead under local anesthesia.
