Heart failure is a chronic condition in which the heart is unable to pump blood as effectively as the body requires, or can do so only at an abnormally high filling pressure. It commonly produces shortness of breath, fatigue, and fluid retention that can cause swelling in the legs and abdomen. It typically develops as the end result of other cardiovascular conditions that have damaged or overworked the heart muscle over time.
