Orthotics

Physical Rehabilitation Therapy

Orthotics is the medical specialty concerned with designing and fitting orthoses, external devices such as braces, calipers, and splints, to influence the structural and functional characteristics of the neuromuscular and skeletal systems. Orthotists, the specialists who practice it, combine anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and engineering to produce custom or prefabricated devices for the lower extremities, upper extremities, trunk, or head, classed as either paralysis orthoses that compensate for muscle weakness or relief orthoses that manage joint degeneration or post-injury recovery. Orthotics is distinct from prosthetics, which replaces a missing body part rather than supporting an existing limb or joint, though the two can overlap in cases such as a leg length discrepancy.
