Antenatal depression, also called prenatal or perinatal depression, is a form of clinical depression that can affect a woman during pregnancy and may lead to postpartum depression if it is not treated. Estimates suggest that between 7 and 20 percent of pregnant women are affected. Stress during pregnancy can influence fetal development and can harm both mother and child, and a child born to a depressed or stressed mother may be less active and show emotional distress. Worry about the pregnancy, an unplanned pregnancy, difficulty conceiving, a history of abuse and economic or family circumstances are named as triggers. Mothers who suspect they are affected are advised to speak with their health care provider.
