Tolerogenic therapy aims to induce immune tolerance in situations where the immune system is pathologically or undesirably activated. This can occur, for example, when a patient who has received an organ transplant develops an immune reaction against the donor's antigens, or when the body mounts an inappropriate response against its own tissues in an autoimmune disease. Research using animal models in transplantation and autoimmune disease has led to early-phase human trials of tolerogenic therapy for autoimmune conditions such as type 1 diabetes.
