Chorionic villus sampling is a form of prenatal diagnosis performed to determine chromosomal or genetic disorders in the fetus, by sampling the chorionic villus and testing it for chromosomal abnormalities, usually with fluorescence in situ hybridization or polymerase chain reaction. It usually takes place at ten to twelve weeks of gestation, earlier than amniocentesis or percutaneous umbilical cord blood sampling, and it is the preferred technique before fifteen weeks.
