Cervical cancer screening is a medical screening test that looks for risk of cervical cancer, either by identifying viral DNA associated with the disease or by finding abnormal, potentially precancerous cells in the cervix and cells that have already progressed to an early cancerous stage. Its goals are to allow abnormal lesions to be treated before they progress to invasive cancer and to lower deaths from cervical cancer by catching disease at an early, more treatable stage. Screening tests fall into three categories, molecular tests that detect high-risk strains of human papillomavirus, cytologic tests such as the conventional Pap smear and liquid-based cytology, and visual inspection using a solution that highlights abnormal areas, and an abnormal result is followed by further surveillance, biopsy or removal of the suspicious tissue.
