The Papanicolaou test, abbreviated as the Pap test and also known as the Pap smear or cervical smear, is a method of cervical screening used to detect potentially precancerous and cancerous processes in the cervix, or more rarely in the anus or the vaginal vault. It was invented by Greek physician Georgios Papanikolaou in the 1920s, with a simplified version introduced by Canadian obstetrician Anna Marion Hilliard in 1957, and abnormal findings on the test typically lead to additional diagnostic procedures aimed at preventing the progression of cervical cancer.
