A caries vaccine is a vaccine intended to prevent and protect against tooth decay. Streptococcus mutans has been identified as the major bacterial cause of human dental caries, and development of a vaccine against tooth decay has been under investigation since the 1970s; in 1972 a caries vaccine was reported to be in animal testing in England, with human testing expected to follow soon after. Several types of caries vaccines have since been developed at research centers, aimed at diminishing or preventing the impact of dental caries on young people in particular.
