Dental sealants are a dental treatment intended to prevent tooth decay. The back teeth have fissures, or grooves, and some front teeth have cingulum pits, and these recesses are especially vulnerable to decay because food and bacteria stick in them and they are hard to clean; dental sealants are materials placed into these pits and fissures to fill them in and create a smooth, easily cleaned surface. They are mainly used in children at higher risk of tooth decay, usually placed as soon as the adult molar teeth come through.
