Trigger Point Injection

A trigger point injection delivers a small amount of medication, most often a local anesthetic such as lidocaine with or without a corticosteroid, directly into a trigger point, a hyperirritable, tender knot within a tight band of skeletal muscle. The injection is intended to relax the affected muscle fibers and relieve the pain the trigger point causes, and some practitioners instead use dry needling, inserting the needle with no medication injected at all.
