Reverse Shoulder Replacement

Surgical Procedure

Reverse shoulder replacement is a type of shoulder replacement surgery that inverts the normal ball-and-socket relationship of the glenohumeral joint, fixing a socket-shaped component on the arm side and a ball-shaped component on the shoulder blade side to create a more stable joint with a fixed fulcrum. It is used where a conventional, anatomic shoulder replacement would be expected to fail, most often in patients with severe rotator cuff damage. Improved implant design and strong clinical outcomes have led it to largely replace shoulder hemiarthroplasty and, in many countries, to rival conventional anatomic replacement as the most commonly performed shoulder replacement procedure.
