Binge eating disorder is an eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of eating unusually large amounts of food in a discrete period while feeling a loss of control over the eating, occurring at least once a week for three months, without the regular use of compensatory behaviors such as purging that distinguish it from bulimia nervosa. Episodes are often accompanied by eating rapidly, eating until uncomfortably full, and feelings of guilt, disgust or embarrassment afterward, and it was formally recognized as its own DSM diagnosis in 2013, having previously been studied for decades as a provisional category.
