Dermatomyositis is a group of systemic autoimmune inflammatory diseases that primarily affect the skin and skeletal muscles, generally producing a skin rash and worsening muscle weakness over time, either suddenly or over months. Other possible symptoms include weight loss, fever, lung inflammation and light sensitivity, and complications can include calcium deposits in muscle or skin. Distinct myositis-specific autoantibodies define clinically and pathologically distinct subtypes, each with its own disease pattern, prognosis and response to treatment.
