A goiter is a swelling in the neck resulting from an enlarged thyroid gland. Worldwide, over 90 percent of goiter cases are caused by iodine deficiency, and the condition can be associated with a thyroid that is not functioning properly. Most goiters are not cancerous, though they may still be potentially harmful.
