A hiatal hernia, also called a hiatus hernia, is a type of hernia in which abdominal organs slip through the diaphragm into the middle compartment of the chest. This can result in gastroesophageal reflux disease or laryngopharyngeal reflux, producing symptoms such as a taste of acid at the back of the mouth or heartburn, along with trouble swallowing and chest pain. Complications can include iron deficiency anemia, volvulus, or bowel obstruction.
