Taeniasis is an intestinal infection caused by adult tapeworms of the genus Taenia, and it generally produces no symptoms or only mild ones, occasionally including weight loss or abdominal pain. Segments of the tapeworm can sometimes be seen in the stool. The infection results from eating undercooked beef or pork containing the immature form of the parasite, and infection with the pork tapeworm specifically carries the additional risk of a more serious complication called cysticercosis, in which larvae migrate beyond the intestine into other tissues.
